At the moment the new trend is mixing up different patterns without clashing and colour colour colour.
I've seen a lot of people trying the colour blocking trend but it's more of a colour clash. Please do not force it if it doesn't go, just cuz you were told to take bright colours together doesn't mean you should kill it : )
